چکیده

High-resolution atmospheric flow simulations of the tidally-locked extrasolar giant planet, HD209458b, show large-scale spatio-temporal variability. This is in contrast to the simple, permanent day/night (i.e., hot/cold) picture. The planet’s global circulation is characterized by a polar vortex in motion around each pole and a banded structure corresponding to ∼3 broad zonal (east-west) jets. For very strong jets, the circulation-induced temperature difference between moving hot and cold regions can reach up to ∼1000 K, suggesting that atmospheric variability could be observed in the planet’s spectral and photometric signatures. subject headings: planetary systems – planets and satellites: general – stars: atmospheres – turbulence

On the Radii of Close-in Giant Planets.

The recent discovery that the close-in extrasolar giant planet HD 209458b transits its star has provided a first-of-its-kind measurement of the planet's radius and mass. In addition, there is a provocative detection of the light reflected off of the giant planet tau Bootis b. Including the effects of stellar irradiation, we estimate the general behavior of radius/age trajectories for such plane...

On the Radii of Extrasolar Giant Planets

We have computed evolutionary models for extrasolar planets which range in mass from 0.1 MJUP to 3.0 MJUP, and which range in equilibrium temperature from 113 K to 2000 K. We present four sequences of models, designed to show the structural effects of a solid (20 M⊕) core and of internal heating due to the conversion of kinetic to thermal energy at pressures of tens of bars. The model radii at ...

Theoretical Spectra and Light Curves of Close-in Extrasolar Giant Planets and Comparison with Data

We present theoretical atmosphere, spectral, and light-curve models for close-in extrasolar giant planets (EGPs) undergoing strong stellar irradiation for which Spitzer planet/star contrast ratios or light curves have been published (circa June 2007). These include HD 209458b, HD 189733b, TrES-1, HD 149026b, HD 179949b, and υ And b. By comparing our models with these data, we find that some EGP...

A Theory for the Radius of the Transiting Giant Planet Hd 209458b

Using a full frequency-dependent atmosphere code that can incorporate irradiation by a central primary star, we calculate self-consistent boundary conditions for the evolution of the radius of the transiting planet HD 209458b. Using a well-tested extrasolar giant planet evolutionary code, we then calculate the behavior of this planet’s radius with age. The measured radius is in fact a transit r...

Looking for Giant Earths in the Hd 209458 System: a Search for Transits in Most Space-based Photometry

We have made a comprehensive transit search for exoplanets down to about 2 Earth radii in the HD 209458 system, based on nearly uninterrupted broadband optical photometry obtained with the MOST (Microvariability and Oscillations of Stars) satellite, spanning 14 days in 2004 and 44 days in 2005. We have searched these data for limb-darkened transits at periods other than that of the known giant ...
